What does the Judgement Tarot Card mean?

Ace of Swords Tarot Card Meaning

Element: Air

Function: Intelligence, the mind, sincerity, fairness

A familiar white hand appears from a cloud with a sword held upright. A crown decorated with laurel leaves hovers at the top of the sword, these two images symbolizing the triumph of the mind and victory. As the sword is held in the right hand rather than the left, we are reminded of righteousness and objectivity. The white hand implies that it is both pure and free from agenda. Even the sword is a symbol of the mind and who we use our intellect. As the tip reaches through the center of the crown, it shows the sharpness of the intellect.

This bright imagery is contrasted by the grey sky and bare, rough mountains in the background. The intellect that is shown is empty, cold, and very much alone as there is no one in the picture gathering around the sword. The sword might be on offer or it could just be on display. It could also be that the hand is defying us to beat its wit. Because of the strong connection to fairness, the sword would not challenge the reader to a battle that requires a weapon, as that would be one-sided.

One thing we can be sure of is that taking the sword means you hold immense power. This power could enable you to destroy, or just to subdue, to separate, or to intimidate. Its strength is emphasized by who well it has been forged together and as one solid piece; it is far more powerful than the individual parts it once was.

This card suggests we should display the power we have in our mind. If you chose to handle the sword, you engage in the mental power that comes with it. It can be harmful, and you will have to be strong to take it. This is the only object in the tarot cards that has the ability to kill when not handled correctly. To accept the truth, you have to first be willing and creative. This card implies that you must think before you act, not doing so will be foolish and could result in a fatality, even your own.

The Ace of Swords is asking you to think and more specifically all that is worldly and tangible and then rise above it. You need to discover the truth and then strive towards it. This will mean that you might have to overcome your fears and step out of your comfort zones. You might have opinions of the world how it stands today but you will also have to go beyond that. There is no guarantee that the road won’t have it bumps but by taking the sword you will arrive at unimaginable places.

When Reversed:

In the upturned position, the Ace of Swords it likely means that you are finding it difficult to see your dreams or you are battling with your own intelligence, but not implying that you lack it. It probably just means that you aren’t using your intelligence or you aren’t thinking sensibly. If you feel the need to use the intellect of others, this will only make you dependant on them in the long run.

You might also be scared or anxious about your own mind and conveying your thoughts and opinions. You could be confused about your ideas and worried about exploring them further. You might be a participant of a group that doesn’t encourage the expression of original thoughts. The thought of standing up for your beliefs and going against the majority may also bring you fear.

You might have planned in advance and acted on your feet with regards to a past experience and this still has an impact on your life now. You might have been quick to follow the latest trend, and this has served you well. It would be wise to continue following your gut.

You might be in the midst of a great change or about to experience one. If the change was unexpected, it will probably change a part of who you are. If there are any violent emotions, learn how to take a step back and manage them. You will need to be prepared, so think about something before doing anything.

The future will be strong and happy, but you need to direct your attention to fulfilling your potential rather than financial gain. Learn as much as possible about something before you rush in. Expect to have a fun life that is full of activity and pushing the boundaries with new experiences.
