Eight of Cups Tarot Card Meaning

Element: Water

Function: Feelings, love, spirituality, creativity

The Moon and the Sun meet as day becomes night. They look down on a man walking away from the eight of cups with an almost sympathetic expression. The Eight of Cups are in the foreground. A river flows away from them and the man climbs some rough terrain. The only thing that is clear about where the man’s direction is that it is away from the cups. Two cups are stacked on top of three and then another two have one cup on top. The five cups together represent sorrow while the three cups celebrate gain. The is balance between the bitterness of loss and the joy of gain.

The man looks ahead and not down in sorrow. His cloak and boots are red, the color of passion and the dark green trousers show life muted. This man will be fine as he wants to move forward. His walking stick looks like a wand, the motivation and drive for him to get away is there and he will be able to start fresh. He has a journey ahead of him, but which way will it be, the path of the river representing emotion and spirit, or will he create his own new path.

The stacked cups are neither spilled nor even filled. It seems like maybe the man stacked them neatly before he left, ready for the next person. Perhaps he felt it was one last celebration before he moved on.

The Eight of Cups isn’t a symbol of loss or letting go. The man has no use for eight cups in the dark of night and it doesn’t make sense for him to attempt to carry them all. And so, the Eight of Cups is about leaving your emotional baggage. It is time to let go of thoughts and feeling that hold us in the past. What stops you from moving forward can be left here. While there doesn’t seem to be anything to fill the void, this is ok. What is probably more important is that your load is lighter, there is distance from the past and the choice has been made to create space for new things.

When Reversed:

You are refusing to move forward. Perhaps you have to leave something behind, and you are unwilling, or you are unwilling to let go of your emotions. Refusing to walk away from this and move on isn’t doing you any good.

When upturned, this card could also mean that you are moving on, but it is a rather messy break. You aren’t convinced of your decision, but you are still going ahead with it. This decision might be out of your hands if it’s the other person moving on or because there is some kind of disaster or situation that is imposing this move on you. If you don’t feel ready, you could feel like you are aimlessly wandering, not knowing your next move.

There may be something in your past that didn’t work as you had hoped and now you are searching for something new, perhaps a project, or romance. Be sure to break away from your negative past.

You can expect something very new and different and you will have to come out of you shell a little. Watch out for something bad happening, the first few days after will greatly impact your road to recovery and how you will experience the world.

Life might not be going as expected. It is time to decide what you want from life and if you are on the right path to achieve this. Know that bad things will happen and try to prepare for it as much as possible.
