Function: Belongings, wealth, tangible objects, practicality
The man in the card looks straight ahead. He seems to be challenging the reader to take one of his pentacles. There is one pentacle balanced on his head, another in his arms, and one more under each foot. He seems to be rich, but the small crown implies that his material success is not big.
The man sits alone, hunched on a stone stool. Behind him is the city. It may be that he is unable to stand up from the weight of the pentacle on his head, or his need to keep it balanced. He may also fear the consequences of standing up, leaving the pentacles under his feet unguarded. Wrapping his body around the other could be for ease or even comfort.
The man doesn’t look happy. If anything, he is tired. The strain of protecting his pentacles during the night might be getting to him. There is no sign of anyone coming to join him and maybe he is happy this way so that he doesn’t have to share his pentacles or his space in the stool.
This man assumes he has control over the pentacles when really, it is the other way around. He may hold on to them tightly, but it’s the pentacles that are keeping him alone and possible even paranoid in the place.
He is wearing the color of magic, red and despair and shadows, black. It is not often that you will see people wearing black in the minor arcana cards. It represents the lack of light and the dark side of humanity. It is the dark side that you will find emotion like greed, hiding from light yet we still try to justify these feelings. The man is protecting his wealth, but his wealth means too much to him, especially considering it isn’t that much.
It is probably more accurate to say that this man is possessive rather than greedy. He isn’t looking to find more wealth, just hold onto what he has so that no one else can get their hands on it. He won’t spend or invest his pentacles and hi makes no move to take them to the city where others may try to take them.
In this position, it could well mean that you are acting like a scrooge with money and you are losing things because of this. You may not have much, but you may also over or underestimate what you do have. It may be that you are poor, and you hold tight to what you do have so that it doesn’t slip away. You might be feeling quite desperate.
It might be that you have put financial wealth above everything else, including love and relationships. You may have money now, but there is nobody on your life that you can share this with. Perhaps you aren’t ready to share yet.
It is important to remember that your money and possessions don’t show people who you really are, and you cannot buy love.
It is likely that you were reluctant to share in the past and that you need to let go of this past in order to break free. You may not like this thought but it must be considered. You might become reconnected with an object from your past and this will fill you with warm memories.
You shouldn’t keep hold of things, especially when you can’t take them forward with you. When was the last time you heard a dying person say they wish they had more money? Material things will come and go. You need to discover what is important to you.
Your future suggests financial stability and that you will be taken care of. You will need to figure out how you want to spend your time. You have money, now look for the deeper connections and happiness the world has to offer.
The answer will be yes.
