There is no doubt about the symbolism with this card. Men, women, and children all stand in open graves with their arms and their faces pointing up to the angel, Judgement. Their skin is ashen-gray, the color that represents death, stillness, and even patience. They have golden hair. Despite the possibility of being dead, they are still wise. They are all naked, all equal. Who they were in their past is of no relevance now. The mountain, ocean, and people all rise to Judgement, who cannot be stopped, or foiled.
Judgement’s hair is also golden, meaning he is wise. He has red (the color of magic) and purple (the color of spirituality) wings. He wears a cloak of blue, showing his calm and clarity. He appears on a cloud, blowing a trumpet to those below, his sounds ring out for a new era. From his trumpet hangs the flag of St. George, the patron saint of war heroes and the Crusades.
Despite our fear of Judgement, he is kindly. He doesn’t have negative judgements of people but makes wise opinions based on the words and actions of people. Those waiting to meet Judgement are humble and kind and will be judged fairly and then rewarded.
If you draw Judgement, it means you are going through or about to go through a time of self-assessment after a significant period in your life. This is a turning point for you. You will soon reach the end of the Major Arcana cards and it is necessary to reflect on this journey.
You are about to begin a new phase of life. You must appreciate all that you have learned and what you are taking with you. As with the people on the card, you shouldn’t take anything with you, nor should you depend on who you were. Judgement does not hint at a particular experience in your new life but instead, the time you need to take to think about your past achievements, who you were and if this is the same person you want to be in the future.
This most likely means that you are holding onto your past and adamant not to let go. You could be blocked from moving forward by a vicious cycle of self-doubt and self-criticism. These negative emotions prevent you from taking action.
When reversed, Judgement might be a sign that you are in complete denial about who you are. You fail to see that your actions lead to consequences. You know that when you face Judgement, you won’t like what you hear.
As a simple meaning, in this position, you might be hypocritical or deflecting. You accuse others of doing the same bad things that you do. You must learn to practice what you preach.
You have completed the period of time you needed for reflection and you have learnt how the era you have been through has impacted you. You are now prepared to leave your ego in the last era and start to gain the benefits of your past journey.
You are at a crossroads. Your past has served you well and you have become a better person. Now is the time to take steps towards the next era of your life.
It will soon be time to reach an end and you should be ready to assess what you have done. What do you want to be known for? What will you be judged on? There is still time to change, but if you don’t, life will be full of hardships.
The answer is yes, but you must also follow your gut feeling.
