Three of Cups Tarot Card Meaning

Element: Water

Function: Feelings, love, spirituality, creativity

This happy card shows three women dancing in a circle, their cups raised high in the air. They celebrate with laurel wreaths on their heads, a sign that they have achieved success and are guarded against harm. The ground is covered with ripe fruit on this lovely bright blue, day. All is perfect. One woman is wearing yellow (intellect), another white (innocence and purity), and the third red (passion and magic). The blue sky is a sign of mind and spirit. While the three women are together, they have all the skill and talent they need.

Their arms are linked and wrapped around each other, their closeness suggesting they are friends or even sisters. Being three, it shows that they are more than a couple, they are a group, a community that has got together because they want to. The card doesn’t imply they need each other or that they have to be together. There is also no indication of what they are celebrating. It could be something they all share of something that has made one happy and therefore the others too.

This card is a symbol of people coming together because they are happy so, it’s a choice they have made. There is unrestrained happiness, and nobody is worried about others watching them in this way. They are also not concerned about whether their behavior is considered ladylike. Social correctness is not of concern because they are alone.

The Three of Cups is telling you not to forget the beauty of friendship. There is a group or union that you can choose to be a part of. When you group together, you are able to achieve more, experience more joy and become more powerful. One should be celebrating life with others instead of trying to do it alone. Even if you are in a relationship, you should still look to be part of a group. This card is all about the group, and the more the merrier.

When Reversed:

You may be feeling as if you aren’t part of a group, perhaps you are the “extra wheel” in the group. Something or someone might be pushing you out, or there is an aspect that you don’t find enjoyable, but you feel obliged to comply. You feel that you have to put up with it or risk leaving.

Alternatively, you may feel left out as you are lacking friends and groups, or you don’t feel that you are accepted for who you are. This may lead you to think that you need to change or conform to fit in, essentially giving up who you are.

There may have been a time when you had everything you needed, and this is reaping rewards now. This may have been hard work or even helping others. You might have felt part of a community and you felt appreciated there.

The ripe harvest next to the women shows their hard work has paid off, and yours has too. Start looking at what you can do next in order to ensure your future has a full harvest.

There will be an occasion to celebrate in the future. You might reunite with friends from your past and it would be a good idea to keep this group together to see where it leads you.
